In 1509, during the reign
of Ferdinand V of Castile and Aragon, the Spanish War against
the Moors was carried out of Spain and across the Mediterranean.
Under the command of Pedro Navabro, they landed in present
day Algeria near Oran. The Spaniards quickly seized the heights
overlooking the city. From this position, using their pikes,
they scaled the walls of the city and stormed into Oran. The
Moslems were no match for the deadly sword-and-buckler style
of fighting of the Spanish infantry and thousands of Moors
were either killed or captured. The forces went on to take
Tripoli the following year and the Moslem rulers were obliged
to pay tribute to the Spanish crown. This early backsword is
one of the forms favored by these sword-and-buckler troops
that many consider the finest infantry in Europe during the
era. The parts are steel and the grip is brass and wood on
this late cut-and-thrust sword. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts®.Includes
leather scabbard.
